The Asst. Director of Parks & Facilities is highly responsible for managerial, administrative, and professional work in planning, developing, organizing, managing, and administering maintenance and repair of public buildings. The Assistant Director will develop, implement, and manage a city-wide public facilities and parks asset management program. Using data from the asset management system, the employee works with considerable independent judgment in prioritizing, planning, and organizing city-wide facilities' maintenance projects, reviewing policies and procedures, developing budgetary controls and recommendations, and in formulating operational recommendations to the Director. Work is subject to review through conferences and written reports for attainment of desired management objectives and conformity with established policies and procedures. This position assists with daily operations and directs daily administrative duties within the department.
A Day in the Life:


  • Develops, implements, and manages a city-wide public facilities and parks asset management program; Collects and analyzes data over diverse divisional programs to make data-driven decisions in prioritizing, planning, and organizing city-wide facilities' maintenance projects; Establishes and monitors management controls for administration and fiscal procedures; Provides oversight in the development and monitoring of the department budget.
  • Develops data driven systems and programs to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service; Formulates and administers annual division budgets and represents divisions in budget hearings.
  • Assists in oversight of professional staff in the administration of general parks operation services; Promotes, organizes, and stimulates good public relations within the community and special interest groups; Directly supervises full time and part time administrative staff; Directly supervisors, facility rental contracts and events; Coordinates all special events that utilize city parks or other city owned property.
  • Assists the Parks & Facilities Director and division supervisors in selecting, training, evaluating, disciplining, and terminating personnel; Coordinates divisional activities by receiving, prioritizing, and assigning job requests; Delegates programmatic responsibilities and authority to the appropriate staff personnel.
  • Manages and monitors a variety of operations to ensure success and implementation of City and departmental objectives; Monitors and reviews jobs in progress and provides direction and assistance with operational problem solving.
  • Responsible for compliance with all City/Department policies and labor contracts; Responsible for negotiating and making recommendations for the terms of outside contractual services and agreements, and enforcing the provisions thereof; Writes grant applications to secure supplementary funds from outside resources for special division projects, and ensures that such funds are properly administered; Keeps abreast of new developments, research, and legislation affecting divisional operations and concerns; Participates as an active member of the Department management team.

    What You Will Need to be Successful:
    Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Parks Management, Construction Management or closely related field.
    Experience: Five years of professional experience in the construction or maintenance and repair of facilities with a minimum of three years in a supervisory role; or an equivalent combination of closely related education, training, and work experience. Two or more years of experience with an asset management system that includes service requests and work orders is required. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months of employment.
    Certifications/License: A valid Kansas driver's license and acceptable driving record is required.
