experience Description: The unit has 4 beds, all private rooms.
There is a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4 with two nurses staffed at
all times. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life
Support (PALS) certifications are required. Common conditions
treated include gastroenteritis, asthma, RSV, general respiratory
issues, and dehydration. There is no administration of drips, as
supervisory staff are available 24/7. There is mid-level coverage
on the unit. Respiratory Therapy (RT) is available at all times.
Heated high flow and CPAP are used on the unit. No ventilators or
tracheostomies are managed on the unit. Management of respiratory
equipment is a collaborative effort between RT and nursing staff.
Nursing staff are not responsible for reading or interpreting
strips. There are no monitor technicians on staff. Shifts are from
7 PM to 7 AM. Set schedules are created by the manager. There is
potential for blocking. Scheduling is done six weeks in advance.
Every other weekend is required. Weekends consist of Saturday and
Sunday. There may be a potential float to provide assistance in the
labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum area. There is a ratio of
1:4 patients per nurse. Staff will undergo one general orientation
shift and three floor shifts with a preceptor on the unit.
