PLEASE NOTE THIS POSTING IS TO BUILD AN ELIGIBILITY LIST FOR FIREFIGHTER POSITIONS WITHIN THE HUTCHINSON FIRE DEPARTMENT FOR FUTURE OPENINGS. The firefighter is primarily responsible for performing emergency response services including fire suppression (building, trash, automobile, wild land, etc.), hazardous material releases, natural disasters and mass casualty events, and emergency medical services, and will also perform fire prevention and safety education duties.This position will also perform fire prevention and safety education duties. In addition to Fire Fighter duties, this position drives and operates fire apparatus and equipment at the scene of emergency incidents and is responsible for inspecting and maintaining assigned firefighting equipment on an on-going basis. Work is normally performed under close supervision in accordance with well-defined procedures, and is inspected in process and upon completion by a Fire Captain. Employees in this class may be required to relieve an officer of higher rank on occasion. This employee should be in excellent physical condition and have the ability to remain poised under extremely difficult and hazardous circumstances. Candidates must be able topass the required entrance exams and medical evaluation process and complete all training and certifications required for this position. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after completing the required training and probationary period. ACADEMY New firefighter recruits that join our department must complete an eight-week academy conducted by Hutchinson Fire Department Fire Training Division. The Recruit Academy consists of courses designed to review IFSAC and the NFPA Standard 1001, Firefighter I and II skills, Hazardous Materials Operations skills, Kansas Emergency Medical Technician skills, and Hutchinson Fire Department policies and procedures. Fire recruits are instructed by the Academy Cadre, which consists of current members in suppression who are assigned to the Academy for the 8 weeks to assist the Training Division. Recruits are tested and evaluated weekly throughout the process on both written and practical skills, and are given both a final written exam and a practical skills test. Recruits must pass all exams with a minimum score of 70%. Work Schedule The department works a modified 56-hour work week. Firefighters are required to work 24-hour shift assignments - living, eating, and sleeping at the station for the entire period, including weekends and holidays, and may be required to work overtime with little or no notice. The shift schedule is as follows: On-Off-On-Off-On-Off-Off-Off-Off. Our firefighters work 10 days per month with 4 consecutive days off occurring 3-4 times per month. The schedule then repeats. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS Firefighters must maintain knowledge, skills, and abilities consistent with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001, Standard For Firefighter Professional Qualifications. Work entails regular exposure to dangerous situations under disagreeable conditions, including natural disasters, extreme heat or cold, dense smoke and fumes, extreme heights, emergency driving, traffic hazards, toxic or explosive atmospheres, exposure to infectious diseases (e.g. tuberculosis, hepatitis, AIDS) with medical emergencies, long shifts with little sleep, and wearing and working in fire department breathing apparatus for extended periods of time. Firefighters will work in areas where vision is limited and/or at extreme heights, including rooftops or on ladders. Firefighters may be assigned to special operational teams that expose them to additional life-threatening hazards and dangers. Firefighters, male and female, sleep in dormitory style quarters. Firefighters are required to wear protective gear and carry appropriate tools weighing a combined total of up to, or over, 100 pounds and wear self-contained breathing apparatus while exposed to extreme hot and cold environments. While performing emergency medical assistance and rescue activities, a firefighter may pull, lift, or carry victims and move equipment requiring the heavy use of arm, stomach, back, and leg muscles. Emergency situations may require firefighters to work in small, cramped spaces that require stooping, crouching, kneeling, and crawling. The tools used by a firefighter require precise arm-hand-eye coordination and movements, such as when operating a chain saw or rescue equipment. The operation of firefighting equipment often requires the coordinated movement of more than one limb simultaneously. Firefighters must have the ability to hear a variety of warning devices and alarms, gas leaks, or calls for help. Some rescue duties require the operation of mechanical rescue equipment and the monitoring of proper safety techniques. A firefighter must be able to distinguish among colors, including the color of smoke and flame, in order to determine the type or source of the fire or to identify other potentially dangerous situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Firefighters must be able to make quick, lucid decisions during physically and mentally stressful situations. Fire operations are dangerous and extremely dynamic situations requiring rapid, accurate decisions frequently involving the life and safety of firefighters and civilians. The fire service is paramilitary in nature and firefighters, during emergency operations, receive orders that must be carried out promptly and without question.
