Under general supervision, the Police Service Aide assists and/or relieves sworn personnel of a variety of routine tasks that do not require the authority of a sworn law enforcement officer. This is a civilian position within the Police Department with no arrest powers. Typical duties include handling traffic-related assignments, working in the call center, and preparing reports and/or documentation. Incumbent may also assist in the Emergency Command Center, Records, Dispatch, Animal Shelter, and may include the operation of a department motor vehicle as necessary for assigned tasks. This is a part-time position working less than 20 hours per week, scheduled on an as-needed basis. Incumbent is expected to maintain an acceptable level of availability with a flexible schedule; however, specific work schedules may be assigned as operationally required. The department is willing to work with individual schedules, to the extent feasible, to accommodate other commitments. Only those benefits required by law will be provided. The incumbent most often works in an indoor setting but frequently may be required to work outside with exposure to adverse weather conditions including but not limited to extreme heat and cold for varying durations. Working in the Command Center performing general office duties is a primary aspect of this position. Work is performed inside public buildings, vehicles, and may require courtroom testimony under routine and stressful conditions. Work requires confidentiality, honesty, integrity, judgment, and problem solving. The incumbent will frequently interact with the public by phone and in person and may encounter hostile or angry customers. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate but may be loud depending on job assignment (sirens, training, animals). The nature of the work will regularly require the incumbent to drive motorized vehicles, operate a variety of office and law enforcement equipment, work in varying traffic conditions, and often perform duties with constant interruptions. Work performed involves the use of telephones, dispatching radios, computers, office equipment, and interaction with staff, citizens, and others. Physical activity associated with working in an office setting is required to perform the daily duties of this position. Must also have the ability to stand, sit, drive, and tolerate adverse weather conditions, at times, for prolonged periods. Must have the mobile ability to walk, at times, on uneven terrain. Employee may lift/carry up to 50 lbs. Occasional pushing/pulling, climbing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, bending at waist and twisting is required to complete tasks. The use of hands and arms is necessary to frequently reach at all levels, and to handle, feel, grasp, or finely manipulate objects, controls, and tools. Employee may be subject to department training such as defensive tactics and role playing for training such as force-on-force. Audio-visual discrimination and perception is required for making observations, reading and writing, safely operating a motor vehicle, operating office and law enforcement equipment, assessing the situation at a scene (specifically traffic), communicating with others, understanding and interpreting radio traffic, and clearly communicating on the radio and phone systems. Must have the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment, law enforcement equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle. Sufficient vision, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, perform surveillance, drive, and complete computer work. The nature of the work, at times, requires memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem solving. The use and wear of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) may be required for this position.
